“Yeah, but they are [pick: ‘bigger’, ‘smaller’, ‘in a different market’, ‘just plain different’].”
If you’re holding out looking for the perfect blueprint to build your company, you certainly will have a very difficult (read “impossible”) time finding one. The lessons from no other company will be an exact fit for you. You can’t do exactly what anyone else has done and expect the same result. That’s in part because you can’t do exactly what they have done. And in part because you are indeed different.
There’s a great opportunity to hide behind that. Since you don’t have the perfect plan, and you can’t get it from anyone else, you can’t really be expected to succeed. Heck, you don’t even have to start.
On the other hand, there are lots of blueprints and some excellent sketches that can give you a really good plan either the big picture or some of the smaller pesky details. The best buildings, built from the best blueprints, generally need some site engineering and craft. The same is true with your business. But there is no reason not to learn from others’ examples. Read the case studies. Talk with your peers.
Which brings me to the title of this post. Whether you are a contractor, someone who runs a program, or a policy wonk, if you’re in the home performance arena, there is no place better than the ACI National Conference for a fruitful exchange of information. It’s baked into the agenda (the agenda was just released, and it looks awesome!) and content. It’s also in the culture. And it’s in your peers who are attending. Come learn some neat things that work. Come learn some neat things that don’t work! And come share a couple of your own lessons. But come!
